Cape Verde 2017

Hi, here's my report for Cape verde Nov 2016, I couldn't wait to get back to Cape Verde after such a great time inJanuary 2016 when we met Leon and Simone, I caught Blactips, Pignosed grunt, bonefish, and bream, all week long, I got bitten off quite a few times, so this time I went tackled up, I took a Shimano Beastmaster surf rod, a Penn 8000 Battle reel, a Daiwa SL20SHV and a Shimano TLD reel, all loaded with 30- 50 lbs braided lines, Hooks were 6/0 or 8/0 circle hooks or Mustad J Hooks attached to 50 lbs multi strand wire, All swivels were Ball bearing so this time I wasn't going to be under gunned. I took my trusty bass rod which is great for scratching out bait fish and can even through a 4 oz lure well beyond the surf.

When we got to the Touareg I couldn't wait to get a bait into the water, I soon caught some bait fish, rigged up a Shark bait and cast out the bait, the wait started, I soon got talking to a guy who said the sharks hadn't been showing, what was going on? my baits remained untouched, sure there were plenty of bait fish, but no sharks, I heard in the bar one evening that a guy had had a 3 footer to the extreme right of the beach, but no matter where I tried I couldn't find a shark, A couple of times the surf caught me out, I lost baiting scissors, even a t bar, to the surf, but that's part of the fun of surf fishing.

Okay I tried a bait catching rig baited with shrimp cast well beyond the breakers, I soon got bites, including a colourful parrot fish, which swam off strongly when released, but still the sharks alluded me, I fished for 5 days and not one shark, was it Breeding season? were the sharks otherwise engaged? were the tides wrong? guess ill never know but we had a great time, guess ill just have to wait for that 5ft shark off the beach, but then again its called fishing not catching.

One thing that really helps is Baiting elastic, its ideal if you want to use a fillet of fish as bait, don't forget a 10 inch T BAR disgorger and a good glove, a must for cleanly releasing sharks. Good head lights are a must as its dark when the sun sets, there are no lights anywhere on the beach.

As I'm writing this post, weve booked up to go to SAL, at the Riu Palace, so I can still dream of those Lemon sharks or even a tiger if I'm lucky
